150-200ms of keyboard input latency only when playing games with niri

Hi,

I opened a discussion about this on niri niri-wm/niri#3176 but I haven't been able to get a resolution.

I'm not able to reproduce this with other Wayland compositors with the same system so I'm wondering if there's something specific about smithay that's tied into NVIDIA cards, or a sub-set of NVIDIA cards / drivers.

I mention NVIDIA specifically because I did post more information about this on Reddit and 1 person responded mentioning they don't have this problem with their AMD card.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this or have a workaround / ideas on how to debug this further?

Are any of them Smithay based? For example Cosmic, or Anvil (our example compositor).

Hi,

Are any of them Smithay based?

Nope, I used KDE Plasma and Hyprland. The delay was not present.

Is there a quick and light way to test either Cosmic / Anvil using my existing Arch Linux install, without it conflicting with niri or anything else with my system? Happy to test it if instructions are given.

The cosmic repo https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-comp has no readme file and I couldn't understand what to do to run Anvil based on https://github.com/Smithay/smithay/blob/master/anvil/README.md.

For example to get Plasma to run I only had to sudo pacman -Syu plasma-desktop kscreen and then start it with startplasma-wayland.

I'm still getting this with an AMD RX 480 GPU btw. I tried switching cards thinking maybe it was NVIDIA related but it seems not, something else is causing this, but it's not a problem with other Wayland compositors that I've tried.
