Hi, I'm Elena 👩‍💻

System & Backend Developer · Cloud Engineer · Free Software Enthusiast

Welcome to my GitHub profile! I hold a BUT Informatique degree from Strasbourg University (class of 2026). During my studies, I completed an internship and then a work-study placement at IUT Robert Schuman's IT department, first upgrading and redeploying their GLPI inventory system, then migrating their infrastructure to OpenStack.

But I'm also...

🌱 a former translator and academic, who used to work for the Council of Europe and taught translation studies at university level
🌱 a Linux enthusiast since 2009, who was active in the Calculate Linux community
🌱 a volunteer campaigning for human rights
🌱 a Russian happily living and thriving in France
🌱 "just" a mom and wife
🌱 in my free time, I enjoy painting portraits, hiking, and mathematical puzzles

🛠 What I Enjoy Working On

Linux, from the inside. I enjoy the parts of a system most people never look at. Permissions, packaging, the way a distribution fits together, you name it. Building Gentoo from source taught me how the pieces connect; Debian and the BSDs taught me what a stable system looks like. I like understanding why a machine behaves the way it does - and making it work too, of course.

Infrastructure that runs itself. My favourite kind of sysadmin work is the kind you only have to do once: automating deployments with Puppet or Ansible, and Bash for scripting, containerising services with Docker, keeping secrets in Vault, serving everything through a well-tuned Nginx or Caddy, and wiring up CI/CD on GitHub and GitLab.

Software that respects its users. On the development side, I'm drawn to systems programming in C and C++, and to native Linux applications that keep your data on your own machine: no server, no account, properly packaged as .deb and AppImage, etc. I'm also at ease on the web back-end (PHP, TypeScript, PostgreSQL).

Where words meet code. I care about clear documentation, localisation and text tooling.
