What does this PR do?

Type of change: new feature, new example

Adds Sol-Attn (arXiv:2607.24027), a training-free sparse attention method for image and video diffusion models, as a new mtsa method "sol_attn". Sol-Attn routes high-scoring KV blocks to exact attention during online softmax and approximates the remaining blocks with proxy scores, so it needs no calibration.

Like VSA (which lazily imports fastvideo_kernel), the kernels are not vendored: they come from the external sol_attn package (CuTe DSL on SM89/SM90/SM100/SM120, Triton fallback on other SM80+ GPUs), imported lazily at runtime.

  • methods/sol_attn.py: SolAttn replaces eligible F.scaled_dot_product_attention calls (non-causal, unmasked, BF16, head dim 128, Q/K/V same shape, CUDA SM80+); everything else, e.g. text cross-attention, stays on dense SDPA.
  • SolAttnAttributeConfig (tau, thresh_type, kv_splits) and the SOL_ATTN_DEFAULT preset.
  • The SDPA-intercept path previously hard-coded for method == "vsa" is generalized: SparseAttentionMethod gains a patches_sdpa class flag and a can_replace_sdpa(...) hook. VSA's existing eligibility check moves into VSA.can_replace_sdpa unchanged, and _set_attn_implementation uses the flag instead of the method name. No behavior change for VSA.
  • Example examples/diffusers/sparsity/wan22_sol_attn.py plus a README section.
  • Bug fix: replace_function (used by the SDPA intercept) did not restore the patched function when the wrapped forward raised, so e.g. a missing fastvideo_kernel/sol_attn package left F.scaled_dot_product_attention globally replaced by the sparse kernel for the rest of the process. It now restores in a finally; test_missing_package_raises_install_hint fails without the fix.

Usage

pip install "sol-attn @ git+https://github.com/NVlabs/Sana@sol-engine#subdirectory=techniques/sparse_backends"
import modelopt.torch.sparsity.attention_sparsity as mtsa

mtsa.sparsify(pipe.transformer, mtsa.SOL_ATTN_DEFAULT)  # or {"*.attn1*": {"method": "sol_attn", "tau": 1.0}, ...}

Testing

On 1x H100 (SM90), torch 2.11.0+cu128, triton 3.6.0, nvidia-cutlass-dsl 4.5.2, transformers 5.18.0, diffusers 0.41.0, with sol-attn installed from the git URL above (CuTe backend cute_sm90 selected):

  • tests/unit/torch/sparsity/attention_sparsity (incl. new test_sol_attn.py): all passed.
  • tests/gpu/torch/sparsity/attention_sparsity/test_sol_attn_gpu.py: passed, both alone and after the unit tests in the same process. With tau=-1e4 (every KV block exact) the output matches dense SDPA (rel. L2 err 1.1e-3, identical for the CuTe and Triton backends); tau=1 takes the sparse path; FP16 inputs fall back to dense.
  • tests/gpu/torch/sparsity/attention_sparsity/test_wan22_skip_softmax.py (VSA/skip-softmax regression for the generalized SDPA path): passed.
  • tests/examples/diffusers/sparsity/test_sparsity.py incl. new test_wan22_sol_attn (tiny Wan 2.2, dense fallback since head dim != 128): passed.

Not run: SM89/SM100/SM120 GPUs, full-size Wan 2.2 generation quality/speed (kernel-level results are in the Sol-Attn paper/repo), and the CI coverage/instafail pytest plugins.

Before your PR is "Ready for review"

  • Is this change backward compatible?: ✅ (the VSA mixed-method error message now reads "Cannot mix SDPA-replacing methods ..."; its unit test is updated)
  • If you copied code from any other sources or added a new PIP dependency, did you follow guidance in CONTRIBUTING.md: N/A (no copied code; sol_attn is an optional runtime dependency installed by the user, not added to pyproject.toml. It is Apache-2.0 per the Sana README, and its own THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md covers BSD-3-Clause FlashAttention-derived files)
  • Did you write any new necessary tests?: ✅

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Sol-Attn sparse attention for eligible image and video diffusion workloads, with automatic fallback to standard attention when inputs or hardware aren’t supported.
    • Added a Wan 2.2 video-generation example and setup guidance for enabling Sol-Attn.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Restored standard attention behavior reliably when an error occurs during sparse-attention processing.
    • Improved eligibility checks for sparse-attention methods, keeping unsupported calls on the standard attention path.

Add the training-free Sol-Attn method ("sol_attn") to mtsa. Kernels come
from the external sol_attn package (CuTe DSL on SM89/90/100/120, Triton
otherwise), imported lazily like VSA's fastvideo_kernel. Eligible BF16,
head-dim-128, unmasked, non-causal self-attention SDPA calls run Sol-Attn;
everything else stays dense.

Generalize the VSA-only SDPA intercept: SparseAttentionMethod gains a
patches_sdpa flag and a can_replace_sdpa hook, and VSA's eligibility check
moves into VSA.can_replace_sdpa unchanged.

Fix replace_function leaving the patched function installed when the
wrapped body raises (e.g. a missing kernel package), which left
F.scaled_dot_product_attention globally replaced.

Add SolAttnAttributeConfig, SOL_ATTN_DEFAULT, a Wan 2.2 example, and
unit, GPU and example tests.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds Sol-Attn sparse attention for eligible BF16 self-attention calls and generalizes SDPA replacement routing. It also adds a Wan 2.2 example, updates sparse-attention documentation, and restores patched SDPA functions after exceptions.

Changes: Sol-Attn Sparse Attention

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sol-Attn configuration and kernel method
modelopt/torch/sparsity/attention_sparsity/config.py, modelopt/torch/sparsity/attention_sparsity/methods/registry.py, modelopt/torch/sparsity/attention_sparsity/methods/sol_attn.py, modelopt/torch/sparsity/attention_sparsity/methods/__init__.py, tests/unit/torch/sparsity/attention_sparsity/test_sol_attn.py, tests/gpu/torch/sparsity/attention_sparsity/test_sol_attn_gpu.py
Adds Sol-Attn configuration and registration. The method checks SDPA call eligibility, invokes the optional kernel for eligible calls, and leaves unsupported calls on dense SDPA. Unit and GPU tests cover configuration, routing, and outputs.
SDPA replacement routing and cleanup

The new Sol-Attn method works for its main inference path, but a few gaps remain. Calls that need gradients can reach a kernel that only supports the forward pass. Explicit KV-split settings can fail on GPUs other than SM90. Under the default preset, cross-attention that happens to have matching shapes can be sparsified instead of falling back to dense SDPA. Tighten these eligibility checks before merging.

Use dense SDPA when the call requires gradients.

If gradient tracking is enabled and any Q/K/V tensor requires gradients, this predicate can select Sol-Attn. The released kernel is forward-only, so the replacement cannot preserve SDPA’s backward behavior. Reject gradient-requiring calls here so training retains dense SDPA. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

NVlabs Sana sol-engine sparse_backends sol_attn kernel self attention cross attention README

💡 Result:

In the `sol-engine` branch, `techniques/sparse_backends/README.md` says Sol-Attn supports **both**, but through separate integrations:

- `make_sol_attn_dispatch(...)` handles ordinary **self-attention**.
- `make_mmdit_sol_attn_dispatch(...)` handles **joint MMDiT attention**: text K/V blocks are kept exact, while text-query rows use dense attention and image/video-query rows use Sol-Attn. Keeping text K/V exact alone does **not** make text-query rows dense. ([ccn.web.tr](https://ccn.web.tr/web-api/iframe-proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2FNVlabs%2FSana%2Ftree%2Fsol-engine%2Ftechniques%2Fsparse_backends))

The underlying `sol_attn(q, k, v, ...)` kernel is a forward-only Q/K/V API; it does not itself take a “self” or “cross” attention mode. The MMDiT adapter supplies the special joint-attention behavior. Do not infer self-attention from tensor shapes.

SOL_ATTN_DEFAULT applies Sol-Attn to every *attn* module, including cross-attention. An equal-shaped BF16 CUDA cross-attention call can therefore pass can_replace_sdpa and use the sparse kernel instead of dense SDPA. The kernel computes valid attention, but its sparse approximation can differ from dense attention. Restrict the default configuration to identified self-attention layers, or provide an explicit self-attention signal to can_replace_sdpa.

Validate explicit KV splits against the selected backend.

If a caller sets kv_splits=2 or 4 on a non-SM90 backend, this method forwards that value unchanged. The upstream kernel raises instead of producing attention output. Check backend support before routing the call, and retain dense SDPA when the configured split is unsupported. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
