…base The Gradio training tab only targets the turbo model. This notebook drives the integrated Side-Step CLI (fixed mode: continuous timesteps + CFG dropout) on acestep-v15-base: installs deps without flash-attn, downloads only VAE/text encoder/base DiT, preprocesses with the base variant, trains and exports the adapter, with Google Drive persistence and resume support. Pass the checkpoint path as one argument.
If CHECKPOINTS_ON_DRIVE is enabled and DRIVE_WORKDIR contains spaces, the shell splits CKPT_DIR after --dir. The base-model download then fails. Run the downloader with an argument list, as the preprocessing command already does when it builds its arguments. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reject duplicate audio stems before preprocessing.
If a ZIP contains album_a/track01.wav and album_b/track01.wav, the recursive scan finds both files. Side-Step writes both results as track01.pt; the later result replaces the earlier one. Check for duplicate stems before launching preprocessing, or give each tensor a path-derived unique name in the preprocessor. Otherwise, training silently loses a sample. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Replace the manifest-only preprocessing guard.
This notebook’s preprocessing path writes .pt files but does not create manifest.json. A completed run therefore never satisfies this guard. Conversely, a manifest left by another workflow makes the notebook skip preprocessing without confirming that its tensors use the base model. Track successful preprocessing with a marker that records the model variant and dataset, and validate the expected tensor files before skipping. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Stop the notebook when preprocessing or training fails.
IPython does not raise on a failed ! command by default. A failed preprocessing command can therefore leave training pointed at old tensors. A failed training command can leave the export cell free to package an earlier final directory on Drive. Execute both commands with subprocess.run(..., check=True) before allowing the next step. …cement Add a dataset-builder cell that writes the ACE-Step/Side-Step JSON from the audio folder (caption/lyrics/json sidecar files, measured duration) with custom_tag, tag_position (prepend/append/replace) and genre_ratio, or re-tags an existing JSON such as a Gradio Dataset Builder export. It previews the exact prompts Side-Step will encode. Preprocessing now re-runs when the dataset changes: Side-Step skips existing .pt files and writes no manifest.json, so the previous check never detected finished tensors and a changed tag would not have been applied. Do not overwrite DATASET_JSON with the generated file.
Line 373 assigns the generated file to DATASET_JSON. The next run of cell 4b then enters the re-tag branch on Line 344 and no longer rebuilds samples from the audio files. Edits to .caption.txt, .lyrics.txt, or .json sidecars are silently ignored until cell 4 runs again. The re-tag branch also keeps any existing per-sample custom_tag. _finalize only sets the tag when CUSTOM_TAG is non-empty. If a user clears CUSTOM_TAG and reruns 4b, the old trigger word stays in every sample. Per-sample tags take priority over the dataset-level tag, so this old tag is still trained. The markdown on Lines 242-243 says that any change in this cell takes effect, and this behavior contradicts it.
Keep the source JSON in its own variable. Remove the per-sample tag when CUSTOM_TAG is empty.

Write the stamp only after a successful, complete preprocessing run.
!{cmd} does not raise when the subprocess fails. The stamp is written whenever at least one .pt exists. Some preprocessing runs stop partway, for example from OOM on a long file or a failed decode. After such a run, the stamp marks the partial tensor set as up to date. Later runs skip preprocessing (Line 436), and training silently uses a subset of the dataset. Check the exit code, and compare the tensor count with the number of discovered audio files.

Disable DiT quantization before loading an adapter.
On a supported T4-class GPU, the pipeline defaults to INT8 DiT quantization. Its adapter loader then rejects both LoRA and LoKR while quantization is active. This launch omits --quantization none, so a user can reach Gradio but cannot complete the documented Load LoRA step without reinitializing the service. Start inference without quantization, and use offloading if the GPU needs more memory. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

When USE_DRIVE has its default value, WORKDIR contains the user's audio, metadata, tensors, and outputs. Gradio serves every file under a directory passed to --allowed-path. other required files as incomplete so their download is not skipped.

Filter samples by successful audio resolution.
This filter checks filename, not whether the sample’s audio_path resolved. For example, a JSON sample with audio_path: "missing.wav" and filename: "song.wav" survives when song.wav exists in AUDIO_DIR. The generated JSON then retains the missing audio path, so preprocessing cannot use that sample. Keep only samples whose resolved audio file belongs to the discovered dataset. Side-Step resolves relative paths from the generated JSON’s directory. (github.com)

Update the samples filter that uses by_name to retain only entries whose
audio_path resolves, relative to the generated JSON’s directory when needed, to
an audio file in the discovered dataset; do not use filename alone to determine
whether a sample is usable.

Ignore entries that are not epoch checkpoints.
The sort key reads n.split("_")[1] for every entry. If checkpoints/ contains a file such as .DS_Store, this cell raises IndexError before it prints any resume paths. Filter for valid checkpoint directories before sorting.

Update the checkpoint listing logic around `ckpts` to filter out entries that
are not valid epoch checkpoint directories before sorting, so unrelated files
such as `.DS_Store` cannot cause an `IndexError`. Preserve the existing
epoch-number ordering for valid checkpoints.

Adds a TARGET_LAYERS choice (attention, or attention + mlp via gate_proj/up_proj/down_proj) passed to Side-Step's --target-modules, for higher-capacity adapters such as voice/timbre fidelity. Keep MLP targets outside the attention-type filter.
If a user selects attention + mlp with ATTENTION_TYPE = "self" or "cross", resolve_target_modules prefixes the new targets with self_attn or cross_attn. The base DiT instead places these projections under mlp. Training can therefore complete without adapting the requested feed-forward layers. Apply the attention prefix only to attention targets, and preserve MLP targets for both LoRA and LoKR. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…init At startup the Gradio pipeline loads the 5Hz LM from <repo>/checkpoints and ignores ACESTEP_CHECKPOINTS_DIR, so the LM was not found on the Drive. Field result on an 84-song dataset matches the official tutorial (~500 epochs for ~100 songs) rather than the Side-Step guide's 50-100. Also note that resuming a cosine run works when EPOCHS is unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01HaFv3KnEJjKbkKhW4AZDav
… defaults - Generate deterministic sample ids and drop created_at so an unchanged dataset no longer triggers a full re-preprocessing every session. - Refuse to train into an existing RUN_NAME unless resuming or OVERWRITE_RUN is ticked, so a new run cannot overwrite final/. - Default to the validated setup: rank 128/alpha 256, 500 epochs, batch 2 x accumulation 2, checkpoint every 25 epochs. PEFT save_pretrained strips the adapter name from tensor keys (...lora_A.weight) while the live PeftModel uses ...lora_A.default.weight, so resume_checkpoint's load_state_dict(strict=False) matched no key and resumed from an untrained adapter while still reporting success (the optimizer and scheduler state were restored, hiding the problem). Load through peft.set_peft_model_state_dict in a small adapter_resume module, report the number of tensors restored, and fail the run instead of silently starting fresh when no tensor matches. Tests: acestep.training_v2.adapter_resume_test (5 tests, including a regression test showing the previous loader applied none of the tensors). A stray space pasted into RUN_NAME split the TensorBoard path and would have sent a resumed run to a different output folder. Strip both fields, fail early when RESUME_FROM does not exist, and quote the logdir. The fixed trainer always used the model config's logit-normal mean (-0.4 for base). Add an optional --timestep-mu override (fixed subcommand only; default unchanged) so training can spend more steps at low noise, where fine detail such as vocal texture is learned. Expose it in the Colab notebook as TIMESTEP_MU (default auto). Tests: acestep.training_v2.cli.config_builder_timestep_test (default, override, vanilla unaffected). Reads every tensor's stored metadata, rebuilds the exact caption text the model trains on (with the dataset tag_position), and flags samples without trigger tag or lyrics before training starts. The CLI advertised the XL variants but VARIANT_DIR_MAP only listed the 2B ones, so path validation looked for a literal 'xl_base' folder and failed. Add the XL entries (matching model_loader._VARIANT_DIR). Tests: acestep.training_v2.cli.variant_dir_map_test (fails without the fix). Add MODEL_VARIANT (base / xl_base) in section 1 and use it everywhere: weights download and model-code sync, preprocessing (--model-variant and a per-model tensor folder, maes2_base unchanged), training, and the model Gradio loads. Training refuses tensors built for another model. Defaults now follow the validated setup: tag maes2 in replace mode, rank 256 / alpha 512, attention + MLP, lr 2e-4. The Gradio training tab only targets the turbo model.
