Summary

On Windows, every RSS figure in the offload logs added by #947 is 0:

[_load_model_context] Offloaded model to CPU in 2.4954s (RSS: 0 -> 0 MB, delta: +0 MB)

Cause. _get_rss_mb calls GetCurrentProcess and GetProcessMemoryInfo through ctypes.windll without declaring their types. The (HANDLE)-1 pseudo-handle comes back as a C int and goes back in as a 32-bit int. GetProcessMemoryInfo then fails with ERROR_INVALID_HANDLE (6), and the function returns 0.0.

Fix. The PR declares both signatures:

  • GetCurrentProcess returns HANDLE.
  • GetProcessMemoryInfo takes HANDLE, c_void_p, DWORD and returns BOOL.

The declarations go on private ctypes.WinDLL handles, not the shared ctypes.windll ones. Setting restype on the shared ctypes.windll.kernel32.GetCurrentProcess would make it return 18446744073709551615 to every caller in the process. Any other untyped ctypes.windll call that passes that value on then raises OverflowError: int too long to convert. I checked this.

Scope

  • acestep/core/generation/handler/init_service_memory_basic.py: the Windows branch of _get_rss_mb only (+9/−2 lines).
  • acestep/core/generation/handler/init_service_memory_basic_test.py (new): 2 tests, Windows-only (skipped elsewhere).

Out of scope: everything else in the module. It was already 237 lines before this PR, over the 200-line cap, and this PR leaves it at 244. If you want it split, moving _get_rss_mb into its own module would be a natural follow-up.

Risk and compatibility

  • The change is Windows-only. The Linux (/proc/self/statm) and macOS/other (getrusage) paths are unchanged.
  • Error handling is unchanged: any exception still falls back to 0.0.

Regression checks

  • New test against main: fails (AssertionError: 0.0 not greater than 1.0). With the fix it passes.
  • Direct probe on Windows 11, Python 3.12.10:
    • Untyped: handle −1, the call fails (GetLastError 6).
    • Typed: the call succeeds and reports a working set of 680 MB.
  • init_service_test + the new tests: 63 tests. The only failure is one error that also occurs on main: test_load_main_model_ignores_cuda_sync_cleanup_error, whose test host lacks _sync_alignment_config.

Reviewer notes

Found while chasing the Windows offload RAM leak (#1368). With this fix, the RSS deltas in those log lines show the leak directly.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved Windows process memory reporting, making working-set values more reliable while preserving the existing fallback when a value cannot be retrieved.
    • Verified that Windows memory readings exceed 1 MB in the tested environment and that retrieving them does not alter process-handle return-type settings.

_get_rss_mb called GetCurrentProcess/GetProcessMemoryInfo through
ctypes.windll without declaring their types, so the (HANDLE)-1
pseudo-handle went in as a 32-bit int, the call failed with
ERROR_INVALID_HANDLE and every offload log line said "RSS: 0 MB".

Declare the signatures on private WinDLL handles so other ctypes.windll
callers in the process keep their default prototypes.

Walkthrough

The Windows RSS path now loads GetProcessMemoryInfo and GetCurrentProcess through private ctypes.WinDLL handles and declares their ctypes signatures. Windows-only tests cover the reported working-set size and GetCurrentProcess.restype.

The RSS change appears mergeable, but the Windows test should compare the shared signature before and after the call to avoid an order-dependent failure.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Compare the shared signature before and after the RSS call.

If another Windows test has set ctypes.windll.kernel32.GetCurrentProcess.restype, this assertion fails even when _get_rss_mb leaves the signature unchanged. Capture restype before the call and assert that it has the same value afterward. ctypes.windll caches its library objects and function attributes. (docs.python.org)
