feat: enable lifecycle hooks and document them - #746
Last of five stacked PRs for SNEP-411. It is based on #738 and targets its branch, so the diff shows only this PR. Merging it turns lifecycle hooks on.
the operator flag --enable-lifecycle-hooks and its check on PodSnapshot and SnapshotJob;
the chart value operator.lifecycleHooks and its helm unittest;
the e2e setup override;
the "not enabled yet" line in the field descriptions.
Documents the feature, following docs/development/writing-docs.md:
API reference: the containers rows on the three kinds, and a Container settings section with every field and default.
Workload contract: a Lifecycle hooks section with the MUSTs for a workload that uses them.
Architecture: a detailed Lifecycle hooks page for the mechanism (pacing, resets, the checks before and after CRIU, retries, recovery after a restart, safety of the actions, code map), and one line each in the overview's flows and code map.
The detailed page records three decisions that differ from the SNEP text: recovery trusts an existing post-restore file, recovery restarts the timeout, and there is no empty-directory rule.
Does this PR introduce an API change?
Lifecycle hooks: PodSnapshot and SnapshotJob can set, per container, a checkpointReadinessProbe that decides when to checkpoint, and a lifecycle.postRestore action that notifies the restored application by file or HTTP. A restore succeeds only once its action succeeds. CRD change: deploy the matching CRDs, operator and node agent together.
Checkpoint workflows can use a dedicated readiness probe instead of relying on container readiness.
Restored applications can receive a post-restore notification through a file or HTTP request. Restore succeeds only after the action succeeds.
Lifecycle settings are saved with snapshot content and applied during restore, without requiring a separate enablement option. Snapshot jobs can pass container settings through their templates.

Walkthrough
The operator no longer requires an enable-lifecycle-hooks flag to accept checkpoint-readiness and lifecycle settings on PodSnapshot and SnapshotJob. The Helm option and test overrides are removed. Documentation describes checkpoint readiness, file and HTTP post-restore actions, and their constraints.
Changes

Summary
Operator acceptance and settings persistence api/v1alpha1/container_config_types.go, api/v1alpha1/crds/*, operator/internal/controller/*
The operator no longer rejects lifecycle settings based on an enable flag. Reconciliation tests verify that container settings are saved and that SnapshotJob reconciliation succeeds. The removed CRD descriptions no longer state that the operator rejects these settings; the schema fields remain unchanged.
Remove lifecycle-hook flag and Helm option operator/cmd/manager/main.go, charts/snapshot/*, e2e/*
The manager flag and Helm option are removed. Helm deployment templates and end-to-end override expectations no longer include the option.
Document lifecycle settings and runtime behavior docs/reference/api.md, docs/reference/architecture/*
The API and architecture documentation describes container settings, their passage through snapshot resources, checkpoint-readiness behavior, and post-restore actions.
Document workload and operational constraints CHANGELOG.md, docs/limitations.md, docs/operations/troubleshooting.md, docs/reference/workload-contract.md
The documentation describes supported file and HTTP actions, configuration constraints, events, deadlines, restore outcomes, and the requirement to deploy matching CRDs, operator, and node agent.
The feature is low risk to merge, but operators may be misled by unresolved lifecycle-hook documentation inaccuracies and should receive corrections promptly.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The gate removal, related operator and Helm test updates, end-to-end override updates, and lifecycle-hook documentation support the lifecycle-hook scope in [#411]. The release note and limitations document the resulting API and operational constraints. No unrelated change appears in the supplied whole-PR summary. The three chart CRD files are intentionally excluded, so their exact contents cannot establish additional scope.

Explanation
No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Explanation
PASS: The API diff changes only the obsolete comment in api/v1alpha1/container_config_types.go and matching generated CRD descriptions. It adds, removes, or changes no exported Go fields or JSON tags. It adds no fields, so no missing +optional or default marker exists. The self == oldSelf immutability markers remain unchanged for both PodSnapshot and PodSnapshotContent.
Full details: Rbac Least Privilege
Explanation
No kubebuilder RBAC marker or Helm RBAC manifest in the reviewed tree grants verbs: ["*"] or resources: ["*"]. The pull request does not modify RBAC markers or RBAC templates. Existing RBAC rules use explicit verbs and resource names.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Direct issue [#411] requires file, HTTP, and Unix-signal transports for the same three states: ready to checkpoint, captured, and resumed. The reviewed changes enable file and HTTP checkpointReadinessProbe and lifecycle.postRestore actions. They do not provide a Unix-signal transport or a captured-state notification. The supplied evidence also does not show one application integration for each transport or a compatibility validation for existing control-volume integrations.
Resolution
Implement the Unix-signal transport and the captured-state notification for the required transports. Add application integration validation for file, HTTP, and Unix-signal transports. Add compatibility coverage for an existing control-volume integration, or remove Fixes #411 and link the narrower feature to an issue with matching requirements.

Keep lifecycle hooks gated until every node agent supports them.
The operator now accepts hook settings and copies them into node-pinned PodSnapshotContent. The operator and agent roll independently. A pre-hook agent waits only for Kubernetes Ready and completes restores without running postRestore. Therefore, a hook-bearing capture or restore on an unrolled node can silently skip the requested hook. Retain the lifecycle gate, or add equivalent per-node capability negotiation, until the agent DaemonSet rollout completes.

Document postRestore as a post-release notification.
The PR removes the lifecycle-hook gate, so this path is now reachable. The agent writes restore-complete and releases the restored process before it runs lifecycle.postRestore. The contract currently documents postRestore as the resume gate.
Update the text to describe the actual ordering:
Suggested fix

When activeDeadlineSeconds expires, the source Job becomes deadline-exceeded and its source Pod is terminated. The agent now runs a container's checkpoint readiness probe and
post-restore action, so the operator no longer rejects them. This
removes the temporary gate added with the API:
- the operator flag --enable-lifecycle-hooks, and the check on
PodSnapshot and SnapshotJob;
- the chart value operator.lifecycleHooks and its helm unittest;
- the e2e setup's override that turned the gate on;
- the "not enabled yet" line in the API's field descriptions.
The operator tests that covered the gate now check that settings are
accepted and reach the PodSnapshotContent. The CPU end-to-end tests
already exercise the hooks; they now run with the chart's defaults.

The docs described the first version of the actions: files opened as
root through the container's root, only on the container's filesystem
or an emptyDir, no host-network Pods, and success on 200 or 204. They
now match the code:
- File hooks run a shell command in the container as its user, so any
path that user can reach works, and the image needs /bin/sh. A file on
a volume that outlives the Pod stays for the next restore.
- HTTP hooks succeed on a 2xx status, follow no redirects, and reach a
host-network Pod at its Pod IP, as kubelet's probes do.
- The only refused probe is one on a port name the container doesn't
have; it also gets a Warning event.
- The architecture page's safety section and code map follow the new
code, and the overview says a workload with a postRestore action waits
for it instead of restore-complete. The waiting event is posted once
per work order, and again after an agent restart.
