Description of your changes

Adds an alpha crossplane xr simulate (#367). It previews how applying changed composite resource or claim files would change a live cluster. Each input is rendered with the Composition the cluster selects for it and the cluster's functions, diffed against the cluster, and its composed managed resources are planned by their providers' diff servers. A claim is simulated as its composite resource, and its result is listed under the claim's name. This is crossplane-diff's xr mode, which #436 had as an input mode of project simulate before the split.

crossplane xr simulate -f network.yaml,database-claim.yaml
  • Flags: the shared simulate.Flags only.
    • -f/--input is required. It takes a composite resource or claim file or a directory of them, as a comma-separated list, and can be repeated, as composition simulate's does. -f - reads standard input.
    • There are no selection flags (-n, --name, --include-pinned, --analyze-on, --minimize-composition) and no --max-concurrency, because the inputs are the resources to simulate. Passing one is an unknown-flag error.
  • Shared code: the command is about 60 lines (cmd/crossplane/xr/simulate.go) and calls the same Flags.Run as project simulate and composition simulate, through a new Composites input. The runner, exit ranking, checks, rejection messages and help sections stay shared.
  • Restored from feat(project): add alpha project simulate on the ported crossplane-diff engine #436's pre-split state, mostly unchanged:
    • The XR-only diff path in internal/diff/diffprocessor (PerformDiff, the input validator) with its mocks and tests.
    • XRReport, FromXRReport, AnnotateXRReport, renderXRReport and the XRD check (checkComposites).
    • The grouped per-XR diff renderer (renderGrouped) and NameGenerated, which overlap.go uses.
    • The XR parts of internal/simulate/simtest (XR and combined assertions), and the router parameter on the integration harness.
    • TestDiffIntegration, TestSimulateProviderPlan, the XR plan-output cases, and the testdata they reference.
  • New:
    • xr simulate passes LoadInputs its own validate closure. It rejects a Composition, a project file or a List, and treats anything else as a candidate, which is confirmed against the cluster's XRDs before rendering. Rejections use the shared message, for example:
-f inputs include Composition "<name>" (apiextensions.crossplane.io/v1); xr simulate takes composite resource or claim files; composition simulate takes Composition files
    • An input no XRD defines gets the same template with its reason:
-f inputs include <Kind> "<name>" (<group/version>), which no XRD in the cluster defines as a composite resource or claim (if it is one, check the kubeconfig context, its apiVersion and that its XRD is installed); xr simulate takes composite resource or claim files
    • A kind: List input is rejected at load, before connecting to the cluster, with ; pass its items as separate YAML documents instead of a List.
    • imageConfigs come only from --image-configs, as for composition simulate.
  • Changes to the other simulate commands:
    • The project, composition and resource simulate helps all point at crossplane xr simulate, and resource simulate's help points at the other three.
    • The shared -o plan help no longer says a Composition always prints first. The design doc lists all four simulate commands.

I have:

Unit tests, the integration suite (nix run .#integration-test) and ./nix.sh run .#lint pass.

Restore PerformDiff with its input validator, ValidatedInput, the
WithInputValidatorFactory option, their mocks, test helpers and tests
from the state before the XR-only path was removed. Keep the
TestManagedByManagerWithNoName case that the managedBy/boundToClaim
table port added and the restored tests lack.

Inputs that are neither Compositions nor project files are composite
resource candidates, which checkComposites confirms against the
cluster's XRDs. Every rejection uses RejectInput's template, so
composition and xr simulate point at each other symmetrically. The
runner gains a Composites input that runs PerformDiff and renders
through renderXRReport.

Restore TestDiffIntegration, TestSimulateProviderPlan, the XR plan-output
cases of TestSimulatePlanOutput and the remaining testdata. The harness
now runs XRDiffTest cases as `xr simulate` with -f per file, and the
TestCompDiffIntegration comments that point at TestDiffIntegration are
restored.

Restore simArgs.FunctionCredentials with its --function-credentials argv,

Walkthrough

The CLI adds crossplane xr simulate for composite resources and claims. The shared simulation pipeline validates inputs, computes XR diffs, and renders grouped reports. The change also adds command documentation, integration coverage, and structured assertions for XR simulation results.

Changes: XR simulation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Command and input handling
cmd/crossplane/xr/*, internal/simulate/inputs.go, internal/simulate/inputs_test.go, cmd/crossplane/*/help/simulate.md, design/one-pager-cli-simulate.md
Adds the alpha xr simulate command for XR and claim inputs, with input validation against XRDs. Help text directs project, Composition, XR, and managed-resource inputs to their respective simulation commands.
XR diff processing and validation
internal/diff/result/types.go, internal/diff/types/types.go, internal/diff/diffprocessor/*, internal/diff/testutils/mocks.go
Adds ordered XR report groups, run-level errors, warnings, and PerformDiff. The default validator handles duplicate and conflicting inputs, managed-input rejection, and render overlaps.
Grouped XR diff rendering
internal/diff/renderer/*
Renders multiple identity-bearing XR groups as ordered sections with per-group summaries and an aggregate footer. Identity-less diffs contribute to totals without a section.
Simulation report flow
internal/simulate/{annotate.go,report.go,run.go,run_test.go}, internal/simulate/help/output.md
Adds composite-input dispatch, XR report conversion and provider-plan annotation, and rendering through the shared simulation result flow.
XR integration coverage
cmd/crossplane/project/integration_{plan_output_test.go,provider_plan_test.go,simulate_harness_test.go,project_test.go}
Extends the integration harness and adds XR plan-output and provider-planning scenarios, including JSON output and provider-plan behavior.
Structured XR assertions
internal/simulate/simtest/{plan_assertions.go,structured_assertions.go,structured_assertions_test.go}
Extends structured expectations and checks for XR groups, resource changes, errors, validation failures, absent fields, name patterns, and dry-run storage versions.

Explanation

The description states that the PR adds the alpha crossplane xr simulate command. It explains the inputs (-f/--input, directories, -f - for stdin), the shared Flags.Run path via a new Composites input, the rejection rules for Composition, project, and List inputs, and the help-text updates for the other simulate commands. It also lists the restored XR diff, reporting, and integration-test code. This matches the changeset, so the check passes.

Full details: Feature Gate Requirement

Explanation

The new experimental xr simulate command can run without enabling its feature flag. Its maturity:"alpha" tag only hides it from help: internal/maturity/maturity.go:19-22 says hidden commands remain callable. The new command's Run method does not check features.enableAlpha before starting simulation.

Resolution

Check features.enableAlpha before running xr simulate, and reject the command when the flag is disabled. Add coverage for both flag states.

Full details: Breaking Changes

Explanation

The PR adds the required public --input (-f) flag in cmd/crossplane/xr/simulate.go:48. The supplied PR metadata does not include its labels, so the check cannot determine whether the breaking-change label is present.

Resolution

Please confirm whether the PR has the breaking-change label. If it does not, add the label or make the flag optional.

Include the full XR identity in section headers.

Could we include the API group and namespace, as the plan output does? With -o diff --compact, two XRs with the same kind and name can have identical headers and diff bodies that omit their namespaces. Users cannot reliably attribute those changes. Thanks!

Update the section header in the diff renderer to include each XR’s API group
and namespace alongside g.XR.Kind and g.XR.Name, using the existing XR metadata
fields and matching the identity shown in plan output so compact diff sections
remain attributable.

Count shared changes once in the aggregate footer.

Could we deduplicate identical resource changes in the footer while keeping both XR sections? When two accepted groups share one modified resource, the footer can report 2 modified, while the plan summary reports one update. Thanks!

Count only XR identities in the footer.

Could we count only identity-bearing groups and update the mixed-group test? When two XR groups and one identity-less group are rendered together, the footer reports three XRs instead of two. The identity-less group’s diffs should remain in the total. Thank you!

Review comment at @internal/diff/renderer/diff_renderer.go at line 357:
Update the aggregate footer call in the rendering flow to count only groups with
XR identities, so identity-less groups do not increase the XR count. Keep their
diffs included in the total, and update the mixed-group test to verify two
identity-bearing groups report two XRs while the identity-less group still
contributes its diffs.

Preserve operational lookup errors.

If neither lookup succeeds because access to an XRD is denied, this reports that the input has no XRD instead of showing the access error. Could we distinguish lookup failures from missing definitions and return the underlying error? That would help users identify the required recovery. Thank you!

Review comment at @internal/simulate/inputs.go around lines 98 - 104:
Update the XRD lookup flow in the input validation path to distinguish missing
definitions from lookup failures. Continue checking both GetXRDForClaim and
GetXRDForXR, but when neither finds an XRD and either lookup returns an
operational error, propagate that error instead of reporting that no XRD defines
the input; retain the existing rejection for genuine missing definitions.

Default namespaced inputs to the context namespace.

Thanks for adding this command. Could we apply the kubeconfig namespace to namespaced inputs before lookup, while leaving cluster-scoped inputs unchanged? If an XR omits metadata.namespace and the user has access only in the context namespace, the unnamespaced lookup can fail with Forbidden instead of previewing the XR.

Update the Composites input handling in c.simulate to default an omitted

Check Before for deleted fields.

Could we also check Before for delete expectations? Empty maps and lists produce no leaf changes, so WithFieldAbsent can pass even when the deleted object contains the field. A regression test for an empty field would protect this assertion. Thank you!

Could we match each expectation to a distinct validation failure? If two expectations match A while the output contains A and B, both searches select A and the count check passes. The test can therefore miss B. Thanks!

Update the assertion logic around assertAbsentInAfter so an explicit null in
both Changes and After is accepted instead of requiring the field to be absent.
Add a regression test covering WithField(path, nil) for create and update plans

Match field errors one-to-one using all refinements.

Thanks for adding these assertions. When two errors share a type and field, the second expectation checks the first error again. This can reject correct output or accept incorrect output. Could we match distinct entries using type, field, message and value, independent of expectation order?

Update the want.errors matching logic in the assertion loop to match each
expected error against a distinct entry in got.Errors, comparing type, field,

Handle XR-scoped resources in AssertStructured.

When a caller passes XR(...).Change(...) directly, AssertStructured panics on a nil root. Could we report that WithXRs is required and update the any-builder-level documentation? Thank you.

The ResourceExpectation.expectation method returns a nil root for XR-scoped

Enforce standalone storage-version expectations.

Could we check the version even when WithDryRunSkipped is absent, and reject a conflicting WithDryRunPerformed expectation? Otherwise, WithDryRunStorageVersion("v1beta1") can pass when DryRun is absent or contains another version. Thanks!

Compare XR expectations by position.

Could we compare each expectation with the corresponding composite and add a reversed-order test? WithXRs promises an ordered assertion, but [XR/b, XR/a] passes when the expected order is [XR/a, XR/b]. This can hide an output-order regression. Thanks!

The WithXRs assertion currently allows expectations to match composites out of
order despite promising ordered comparison. Update WithXRs to compare each
expected XR with the composite at the corresponding position, and add a
reversed-order test that fails when the output order differs.
