Description of your changes

Adds Git HTTPS authentication to dependency add and project build, using the same flags and environment variables already supported by dependency update-cache:

  • --git-token / CROSSPLANE_GIT_TOKEN
  • --git-username / CROSSPLANE_GIT_USERNAME, defaulting to x-access-token

All three commands now reuse the existing git.HTTPSAuthProvider, removing the duplicate gitAuthProvider implementation from cmd/crossplane/dependency/auth.go.

The existing clone and authentication behavior of dependency update-cache is preserved. Credentials are not persisted in the project file. Anonymous access is preserved when no token is supplied.

Tests exercise all three commands against local HTTP and HTTPS servers, covering authenticated and anonymous access. They also cover flag and environment parsing, the default username, backward compatibility for HTTP authentication, and ensuring clone errors do not expose the token. Command help has been updated.

Fixes #370

I have:

  • Read and followed Crossplane's contribution process.
  • Run ./nix.sh flake check to ensure this PR is ready for review.
  • Added or updated unit tests.
  • Linked a PR or a docs tracking issue to document this change. Command help and generated CLI reference content are updated in this PR.
  • Added backport release-x.y labels to auto-backport this PR. No backport is proposed in this PR.

Validation: go test ./..., git diff --check, and ./nix.sh flake check passed after rebasing onto main (Linux amd64).

Walkthrough

The dependency add and project build commands now accept Git HTTPS credentials from flags or environment variables and pass them to the dependency manager. Cache updates use the internal HTTPS auth provider. Tests verify credential delivery and token redaction, and help text documents the options.

Changes: HTTPS Git credentials

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure credentials for add and build
cmd/crossplane/dependency/add.go, cmd/crossplane/project/build.go, cmd/crossplane/project/build_test.go, cmd/crossplane/dependency/help/add.md, cmd/crossplane/project/help/build.md
The add and build commands accept Git token and username values from flags and environment variables, with x-access-token as the default username. They pass an HTTPS auth provider to the dependency manager. The build test checks credential delivery and token redaction. Help text documents the options and states that credentials are not saved in the project file.
Reuse the provider for cache updates
cmd/crossplane/dependency/cache.go, cmd/crossplane/dependency/auth.go, cmd/crossplane/dependency/dependency_test.go
Cache updates use the internal HTTPS auth provider, replacing the local provider that was removed. Tests check Basic Auth credentials and token redaction for dependency add and cache update.

Explanation

[#370] dependency add and project build accept the requested flags and environment variables. They pass the credentials to the shared Git authentication provider and default the username to x-access-token. Credentials are runtime manager options, not project-file or URL fields. The added tests check credential delivery and token redaction for unauthorized HTTPS clone errors. Those tests do not demonstrate a successful clone. The incremental diff was unavailable, but the current PR summary supports the assessment.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

[#370] The command changes, help updates, and tests support Git authentication. Reusing the shared provider in dependency update-cache removes duplicate authentication code. No unrelated change is demonstrated in the supplied whole-PR summary.

Full details: Feature Gate Requirement

Explanation

The PR extends existing Git authentication to two CLI commands; it does not add an experimental feature or change apis/**. The commands use the existing authentication provider only when a token is supplied. Anonymous access remains the default.

Nitpick Use cmpopts.EquateErrors() for the error case.

592-597: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Use cmpopts.EquateErrors() for the error case.

Thank you for covering the protocol matrix in a table. The cases are clear.

The error case uses a wantError bool and a nil check. The repository test conventions ask for cmp.Diff with cmpopts.EquateErrors(). This also lets the test check which error comes back. Could the table carry a wantErr error instead? The non-HTTPS provider path returns the provider error unwrapped, so a sentinel error works.

Proposed change
-		wantError bool
+		wantErr   error
...
-			if tc.wantError {
-				if err == nil {
-					t.Fatal("expected provider error")
-				}
-				return
-			}
-			if err != nil {
-				t.Fatal(err)
-			}
+			if diff := cmp.Diff(tc.wantErr, err, cmpopts.EquateErrors()); diff != "" {
+				t.Fatalf("error (-want +got):\n%s", diff)
+			}

This needs a cmpopts import. It also needs a package-level sentinel error, such as errProvider, that the OtherProvider case returns and expects. The same rules ask for a reason field on each case. Adding one would help readers see why each protocol is expected to get or not get credentials.

As per path instructions, **/*_test.go: "use cmp.Diff with cmpopts.EquateErrors() for error testing. Check for proper test case naming and reason fields."

Update the table-driven test’s tc.wantError boolean to an expected error value
and compare it with err using cmp.Diff and cmpopts.EquateErrors(); use a
sentinel for the OtherProvider case, which returns its provider error unwrapped.
Add a reason field to each test case and provide concise explanations for the

Clarify the invalid-endpoint error message.

A malformed repository URL returns through authMethodForRepository before git.Clone runs. The resulting error is failed to get authentication method: invalid git endpoint: ...; it does not use the later failed to clone repository from %q wrapper that includes the repository. The error identifies the technical failure, but it does not clearly tell the user which repository URL failed.

Could the inner message include the repository and state that its URL is invalid?

 		}
 		if endpoint.Protocol != "https" {

This preserves the existing authentication-path behavior while adding the missing repository context. It also satisfies the Go-file requirement for a meaningful end-user error without requiring the endpoint check to move out of the authentication path.

Review comment at @internal/git/git.go at line 191:
Update the error wrapping in authMethodForRepository so malformed repository
URLs produce a clear message identifying the invalid URL and including the
repository value. Keep the endpoint check in the authentication path and
preserve the underlying error.

Thanks for the contribution, @DanielTezolin! I've left a couple of comments on the tests, but the actual implementation looks good to me.

I don't think this test has much value - it's basically exercising kong, not any of our code.

Could this test be split and moved to the packages for the commands it exercises? Or maybe even into internal where the creds are used? It could probably also be simplified there by setting the relevant flag fields directly, rather than invoking the kong parsing logic.

The existing test in this file is for handling of the global --config flag.
