managed: write status with a fresh context after the reconcile deadline - #1253
When an external client ignores the context it is given and returns after the reconcile context has expired, updateStatus used that expired context too, so the status write failed. The managed resource then kept no conditions and the failure was only logged at debug level.
updateStatus now checks whether the reconcile context has ended and, if so, writes the status with context.WithoutCancel and a timeout of reconcileGracePeriod, the same way #102 handled this before. The deferred cancel is released when updateStatus returns.
I did not change the log level for failed status updates, which the issue also suggests, nor the provider side that ignores its context.
Added backport release-x.y labels to auto-backport this PR.
TestModernReconcilerWritesStatusAfterContextEnds cancels the reconcile context inside Observe, with a status client that fails on an ended context. It fails on main (cannot update managed resource status: context canceled) and passes with the change; the rest of ./pkg/reconciler/managed passes. I did not run the nix flake check.
An external client that ignores its context can overrun the reconcile deadline. Every status write then failed with the expired context, so the resource kept no finalizer and no conditions. Write the status with a context detached from the expired one.

When the reconcile context has ended, the managed reconciler now uses a fresh, bounded context to write status. A new test checks status writes with active and canceled contexts.
Changes: Managed status persistence

Summary
Status writes after cancellation pkg/reconciler/managed/reconciler.go, pkg/reconciler/managed/reconciler_modern_test.go
When the reconcile context has ended, the status update uses a context without the original cancellation and applies reconcileGracePeriod as a timeout. The test checks status writes for active and canceled contexts.
The change restores status writes after cancellation with a bounded timeout. Only a small test-convention correction remains; the existing deadline limitations are not worsened.

Explanation
The whole-PR diff against the merge base changes two files: pkg/reconciler/managed/reconciler.go (+14/-1, status-update closure only) and pkg/reconciler/managed/reconciler_modern_test.go (new test, +85). Both changes support the status-write objective for [#1251]. No unrelated behavior change appears in the diff. Note: the PR description names TestModernReconcilerWritesStatusAfterContextEnds, but head contains TestModernReconcilerWritesStatus with a ContextEnded case. The commit 9370035 makes the test table-driven. This naming mismatch does not affect scope.
Full details: Breaking Changes
Explanation
No breaking public API change is introduced. The production diff changes only the private updateStatus closure in Reconciler.Reconcile; it adds a fresh, 30-second context only after the existing reconcile context has ended. Exported declarations and signatures are unchanged, and the added test is test-only. This is a status-write recovery behavior, with no evidence that it breaks existing users.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#1251] Status objective is met. At head, the only reconciler change is in the status-update closure in pkg/reconciler/managed/reconciler.go. When ctx.Err() is non-nil, it derives statusCtx with context.WithoutCancel and a reconcileGracePeriod timeout, defers its cancel, and passes statusCtx to r.client.Status().Update. The test TestModernReconcilerWritesStatus (cases ContextActive and ContextEnded) cancels the reconcile context inside Observe. The fake status client rejects ended contexts, and the test checks that the ReconcileError condition is written. Thank you for the focused fix.
Unmet objective: the issue reproduction expects the finalizer and a ReconcileError condition to be written (issue title and 'How can we reproduce it?'). The diff does not change AddFinalizer, which still uses the reconcile ctx. The issue reports that this call fails with context deadline exceeded and leaves the resource without a finalizer. No test checks that the finalizer is written after the context ends. The log-level change and the provider-side context behavior are excluded by the PR and are not counted here.
Uncertainty: I did not confirm the exact call order of AddFinalizer and updateStatus at head. The FAIL rests on the diff, which leaves AddFinalizer unchanged, and on the issue's stated expectation.
Question for the author: is the finalizer intentionally out of scope for this PR? If so, the issue and PR description should say so.
Resolution
Apply the same ended-context handling to the finalizer write. When ctx.Err() is non-nil before AddFinalizer, use a context derived with context.WithoutCancel and a reconcileGracePeriod timeout. Add a unit test in which Observe cancels the reconcile context and the expected managed resource has the finalizer and the ReconcileError condition. If the finalizer is out of scope, confirm this with the maintainers and update the issue or PR description.

Bound status writes by remaining time, not only by expiry.
updateStatus reuses the reconcile context unless that context has already expired. A status write that starts a few seconds before the deadline can fail with a deadline error, and the condition is not persisted. Consider detaching every status write with its own bounded context.

Apply the deadline fallback to the paused-branch status write too.
The paused branch at reconciler.go:1058 calls r.client.Status().Update(ctx, managed) directly. It does not use the fallback that updateStatus now applies. If the reconcile deadline expires after the managed resource fetch and before this write, the write fails. The ReconcilePaused condition is then not persisted on that reconcile. The error is returned, so the reconcile requeues and the next pass writes the condition. Extract the fallback into a shared helper and use it in both places.

Extract the canceled-context status-write fallback in updateStatus into a shared
helper that uses reconcileGracePeriod, then use it for both the normal status
update and the ReconcilePaused status write. Preserve the existing context
behavior and ensure the fallback context is canceled after the write.
Assert that the status context has a deadline in the new test.
The status-update mock checks only ctx.Err(). The fallback context is created with context.WithoutCancel(ctx), which drops cancellation. If the WithTimeout wrapper were removed, the mock would still see ctx.Err() == nil and the test would pass. Status writes would then have no deadline, and a stalled status client could hold reconciliation past reconcileGracePeriod.
Add a check that the status context has a deadline:

Use cmpopts.EquateErrors() in this error assertion.
The path instruction for **/*_test.go requires cmpopts.EquateErrors() for error comparisons, but this assertion uses test.EquateErrors(). Because the expected error is nil, both comparators give the same result here, so the change does not alter test behavior.
As per path instructions, **/*_test.go requires "use cmp.Diff with cmpopts.EquateErrors() for error testing."

This matches what I read in the reconciler: every error path in Reconcile ends in updateStatus(), and once ctx has expired the Status().Update was the second thing to fail, so the conditions never landed. Scoping the fresh context to that one write keeps the deadline for everything else, and the ContextEnded case cancels inside Observe, which is the shape of the report in #1251. Read against head on main, not run locally.
One question rather than a finding: AddFinalizer(ctx, ...) right before it still fails on the expired context, so after this change the resource shows the ReconcileError condition but still carries no finalizer until a later Observe returns in time. Is leaving the finalizer for a follow-up the intended scope here?
I would approve this; the decision is with the maintainers.
