Fixes #260.

Only replace the final segment with Z when it is a closing Line and other segments remain. A closing quadratic/cubic Bezier or Arc carries geometry that a straight closepath cannot represent; it must remain in the serialized path. Keep a sole zero-length Line as well, so its position is not reduced to an unparseable Z.

Sixteen unittest subcases verify exact geometry and length after round-tripping a closed quadratic, a closed cubic, a two-arc circle, and a zero-length line in absolute/relative and shorthand/full output modes. Every new subcase fails on unchanged master. Existing line-closing output tests continue to pass.

Validation on Windows / Python 3.13.7:

  • Full suite: 112 tests + 16 subtests pass, four existing numerical/deprecation warnings.
  • Selected Ruff correctness checks and diff check pass.

Default serialization, closure detection and compound-path policy are unchanged. Independent of #259. Signed off; AI assistance was used for implementation and regression tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed closed-path serialization to preserve closing curves and single-segment lines.
    • Preserved smooth-curve control context when a path revisits its closing point.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for closed paths with quadratic and cubic curves, arcs, and zero-length lines across absolute/relative and smooth-command formats.
    • Verified serialized paths end with a close command, parse back consistently, and preserve path length.

Walkthrough

Path.d() now omits a final segment for closed-path serialization only when that segment is a line and the path has multiple segments. New tests verify round trips for closed paths containing curves, arcs, or a zero-length line.

Path.d() preserves a sole zero-length line and final Bézier or arc segments when emitting z. Tests cover absolute and relative commands, smooth and full commands, path equality, and length.

This fixes closed paths losing their final curve or arc when serialized with explicit closing. One narrow floating-point edge case remains: with relative output, a closing curve can round-trip with a tiny extra closing line. It is safe to merge with that known limitation.

Explanation

Issue #260 requires explicit use_closed_attrib=True serialization to preserve closing Beziers and Arcs, shorten only a closing Line when other segments remain, and retain a sole zero-length Line. The reviewed change applies that condition in Path.d(). It also keeps continuous curve segments in one subpath, which preserves smooth-control context. The supplied test summary reports round-trip coverage for quadratic, cubic, two-arc, and zero-length-line cases in absolute/relative and shorthand/full modes, with geometry and length checks. The reported full suite passes.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes are limited to svgpathtools/path.py and focused tests in test/test_path.py. The source change controls closing-segment replacement and smooth-control handling during serialization. The tests validate the requirements in issue #260. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 33.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not insert a moveto before a retained closing curve.

For Path(QuadraticBezier(0j, 1, 0j), QuadraticBezier(0j, -1, 0j)), the retained final curve starts at end, so this condition inserts a new moveto. With useSandT=True, the serializer still uses the previous curve to emit T, but the parser resets the control point after the moveto. The restored final curve has the wrong geometry. Avoid the moveto for continuous segments and add a round-trip test for this case.

Update the moveto condition in the Path serializer so a continuous retained
closing curve does not trigger a moveto when seg_start equals end, preserving
the prior curve’s control-point context for T serialization. Add a round-trip
test for the two-QuadraticBezier Path with useSandT enabled and verify the
restored final curve retains its geometry.

Preserve the closing endpoint in relative output.

For Path(Line(0.1+0j, 1+0j), QuadraticBezier(1+0j, 1+1j, 0.1+0j)), relative serialization emits the final offset as -0.9. Parsing reconstructs the endpoint as 0.09999999999999998, so Z adds an extra Line back to 0.1. The restored path has a different segment count and an incorrect unit_tangent(1). Preserve the final endpoint exactly, for example by emitting the closing curve with absolute coordinates.

The closing-point revisit case reproduces; fixed in d0dac61. Continuous segments now keep their control-point context instead of inserting another moveto. Added quadratic and cubic loop cases with absolute/relative coordinates and shorthand enabled/disabled (8 subcases); each checks a single moveto and exact parsed geometry. Full suite: 113 tests and 24 subtests pass, with four existing warnings.
