fix(operator): use ClusterIP gateway for own site - #463
Local arm64 run confirmed the amd64 VCR pod starts and the site GridSite reaches Connected=True while its spec has no gatewayEndpoint. The remaining direct MetalLB TLS checks require the rootless container network, so CI will verify the full e2e leg.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
The operator’s own site can use its configured or discovered gateway address when no endpoint is declared, without changing its configuration.
A declared endpoint takes precedence over a discovered address. If no usable address is available, the site reports a specific status reason.
Documentation
Updated gateway address guidance and troubleshooting information, including use when SWIM is disabled and how the operator’s own site uses configured or discovered addresses.

Walkthrough
The operator now shares configured or discovered gateway addresses with its own GridSite controller. The controller uses a resolved address when the GridSite has no declared endpoint, without changing its spec. E2E setup and architecture documentation cover this behavior.
Changes: Local gateway address resolution
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Resolve and distribute gateway addresses crates/operator/src/gateway.rs, crates/operator/src/main.rs, crates/operator/src/swim_runtime.rs, charts/grid-operator/values.yaml, docs/architecture/operations.md
The discovery poller publishes changed addresses to a watch channel and updates SWIM when a handle is available. Startup passes address updates and the site name to the GridSite controller. The chart and operations documentation describe discovery and configured address use.
Apply the address to the own GridSite crates/operator/src/controller/grid_site.rs, crates/operator/src/enroll/local/conformance.rs, crates/operator/tests/status_conformance/peer_site.rs, docs/architecture/crds.md, docs/architecture/operations.md
The controller preserves a declared endpoint. Otherwise, it uses a resolved address on a local copy and reports GatewayAddressUndeclared when no address is available. Tests cover address resolution, endpoint precedence, peer exclusion, and the undeclared reason. The architecture documentation describes these behaviors.
Local gateway E2E setup
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Set up and validate local gateway access scripts/e2e-hub-site.sh, tests/e2e/topologies/grid-hub-site/README.md
The Local-membership E2E setup creates in-cluster gateway Services and checks that the site GridSite connects without a declared endpoint. The script also preloads the model image on non-x86_64 hosts and narrows the health-log exclusion for a paired self-probe rejection.
Test adjustments
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Update test scenarios crates/enrollment/src/invite/tests.rs, crates/fleet-dashboard/src/collector/site.rs
The invite retry test checks that successful service calls do not refund prior retry failures. The slow-site test uses a two-second per-site timeout while retaining the shorter poller timeout.

Issue 485: The change adds an actionable missing-address reason for the own GridSite, but does not implement the issue’s peer-condition changes or all requested reason names.
Issue 344: The E2E changes add runtime validation for ClusterIP gateway Services and Local-membership own-GridSite connection assertions.

Peers may keep using a gateway address after it disappears, so withdrawal should be fixed before merging. An unpaired gateway rejection can also go undetected by the E2E health check.

Explanation
The title "fix(operator): use ClusterIP gateway for own site" matches the main change. The PR makes the operator's own GridSite reconcile with a configured or discovered gateway address (such as a ClusterIP Service) without writing that address into the spec. Gateway discovery now runs independently of SWIM and triggers GridSite reconciliation. The title is specific, follows the conventional commit style, and fits the linked issue's goal of reaching Connected with a ClusterIP gateway. It does not mention the GatewayAddressUndeclared reason or the e2e changes, which is expected for a short title.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #457 requirements are addressed. gateway.rs resolves the configured or discovered address independently of SWIM and publishes updates. grid_site.rs uses spec.gatewayEndpoint first, then the resolved address, without changing the resource spec. The own site reports GatewayAddressUndeclared when neither address exists. Tests cover configured ClusterIP behavior, the missing-address reason, endpoint precedence, Local membership, peer isolation, and unchanged specs. The e2e changes verify the Local ClusterIP case.

Explanation
The pull request includes changes that have no demonstrated connection to issue #457. crates/enrollment/src/invite/tests.rs changes retry-test setup. crates/fleet-dashboard/src/collector/site.rs changes a slow-site timeout test. These changes do not implement or verify gateway address resolution, own GridSite reconciliation, or the Local ClusterIP scenario.
Resolution
Remove the unrelated enrollment and fleet-dashboard test changes, or provide a linked coding requirement that requires them.

GatewayAddressUndeclared to explain that, when the own site has no usable
endpoint and the gateway address watch has no address, reconciliation uses this
reason for both Swim and Local membership; describe the resulting local-serving
behavior and note that the reason is emitted as a Warning event because it is
not in event_type_for_reason’s Normal list.
Review comments at @crates/operator/src/gateway.rs:
- Around line 170-183: Extract the gateway publication logic from the poller
into a testable helper that updates the resolved-address watch and any available
SWIM handle. Add focused unit tests verifying that publishing the same address
does not notify watch receivers and that an address is applied when a SWIM
handle becomes available after the initial publication.
Review comments at @scripts/e2e-hub-site.sh:
- Line 386: Update own_site_gateway_not_in_spec to capture the kubectl output
and return failure when the command fails; only check whether the captured
address is empty after a successful call, so missing GridSites or API errors
cannot pass the assertion.
