SonarQube Cloud's first analysis of main reported 10 issues. I checked each one.

Fixed (real)

  • python:S4830, mail.py: the optional plain-SMTP mode (smtp_starttls=false) sent mail without TLS. Removed: mail is now always encrypted with certificate checks, using implicit TLS on port 465 and STARTTLS otherwise. Resend works on both. Test for 465 added; the self-hosting page notes both ports.
  • typescript:S8786, routes.ts: /\/+$/ backtracks on long runs of slashes; replaced with a loop.
  • typescript:S9379: the autoFocus attribute on "Yes, delete" is replaced by a callback ref with the same behaviour (focus moves to the confirm button when it appears).

False positives, marked with the reason

  • python:S4502, "CSRF disabled": Sonar looks for Flask-WTF; CSRF is enforced by app/security/csrf.py (per-session token plus Origin and Sec-Fetch-Site checks), covered by tests.
  • typescript:S6845 (3x), tabIndex on non-interactive elements: these are scrolling regions, and keyboard users need focus to scroll them (WCAG 2.1.1; axe scrollable-region-focusable).
  • typescript:S6825: aria-hidden on a canvas, which is not focusable.
  • typescript:S7767, use Math.trunc instead of | 0: | 0 is the 32-bit wraparound the PRNG relies on; Math.trunc would change its output.
  • css:S8776: the analyzer can't parse Tailwind's @custom-variant; ignored for that rule and file in .sonarcloud.properties.

Pre-launch testing plan (roadmap and status): Playwright end-to-end tests, smoke tests on release tags, a stress test with 15 to 20 simulated users in Docker, and 100% coverage everywhere. Planned for the end, not started.

Tests: backend mail and notify tests, 38 frontend; lint and types pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • URLs made up of multiple slashes now resolve to the home page.
    • The list-deletion confirmation button receives focus when it appears, improving keyboard navigation.
  • Improvements

    • Outgoing email connections are always encrypted: ports 465 and 2465 use implicit TLS; other ports use STARTTLS.
    • OFFLINESHELF_SMTP_STARTTLS=false is no longer supported; installations that still set it receive a warning.
  • Documentation

    • SMTP setup guidance now explains the encryption behavior for ports 465, 2465, and 587.

Walkthrough

Mail sending now uses TLS on all ports: implicit TLS on ports 465 and 2465, and STARTTLS on other ports. Frontend changes adjust slash-only route handling and deletion-confirmation focus. Other changes update analysis checks, annotations, and launch-testing plans.

Changes: SMTP transport

Layer / File(s) Summary
Encrypted SMTP transport
backend/app/config.py, backend/app/mail.py, backend/tests/test_mail.py, frontend/src/pages/SelfHost.tsx
Mail sending uses SMTP_SSL on ports 465 and 2465, and STARTTLS on other ports. Tests cover implicit TLS and the warning for the legacy setting. The self-hosting page describes the encrypted options.

Frontend behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Root route normalization
frontend/src/seo/routes.ts
Slash-only paths now resolve to the root route.
Deletion confirmation focus
frontend/src/pages/AppPage.tsx
The confirmation button receives focus through a callback ref instead of autoFocus.

Analysis annotations and required checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Analysis suppressions and required checks

The SonarQube configuration ignores css:S8776, and inline NOSONAR annotations mark existing declarations and PRNG behavior. The Flask construction comment identifies the CSRF implementation. The main ruleset adds SonarCloud Code Analysis and CodeRabbit as required checks.

Launch testing plans

Layer / File(s) Summary
Roadmap and status updates
docs/roadmap.md, docs/status.md
The roadmap adds planned end-to-end, release smoke, stress, and coverage testing. The status page updates the next-session checklist and documents the legacy SMTP setting behavior.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 2dad8

The reviewed changes have no established merge-blocking risk.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 2dad8

The change strengthens email confidentiality without an identified security regression. Plaintext-only relays will stop working rather than receive unencrypted credentials or messages. Notification completion and retry behavior remain unchanged, but deployment verification and broader security coverage are incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly affected security boundary is the connection from an installation's backend to its configured SMTP relay. The strengthened control protects SMTP credentials and notification content in transit; relay incompatibility affects that installation's email notifications.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A network attacker stripping STARTTLS support could interrupt delivery, but the reviewed sender does not proceed to authentication or message submission after TLS negotiation fails. This removes the base's explicitly configurable plaintext path rather than introducing a downgrade path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The relay identity check is delegated to the standard-library default SSL context in both TLS modes. The removed configuration flag cannot disable that control, including when explicitly set to false.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The existing send-then-commit protocol can retry a message if the relay accepts it before a later exception or persistence failure. That partial-failure window predates this PR; mandatory TLS does not change the ordering or delivery-state owner.

Docstring coverage is 14.29% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 7 functions across 11 files.

Review comments at @backend/app/mail.py:
- Line 28: Update the SMTP connection setup in the branch containing `if port ==
SMTPS_PORT` so implicit TLS is selected independently of the port. Use an
operator-configurable setting to choose implicit TLS, preserving the existing
behavior by default for current configurations.
- Line 34: Add an upgrade warning for installations that set
OFFLINESHELF_SMTP_STARTTLS=false, explaining that the setting is no longer
honored and notifications require a TLS-capable relay. Include migration
guidance to configure a TLS-capable relay; locate the change in the SMTP setup
around smtp.starttls().

Review comments at @docs/status.md:
- Around line 30-31: Update the Quality gates entry to match the checked-in
required-check ruleset: remove the claim that SonarQube Cloud and CodeRabbit are
required checks unless they are added to that ruleset.

Review comments at @frontend/src/pages/AppPage.tsx:
- Around line 477-478: Update the confirmation’s inline focus ref in AppPage to
use a stable useCallback ref or an effect that focuses the button only when the
confirmation appears, so rerenders do not steal focus after the user tabs to
Keep. Add a regression test that rerenders while the confirmation is open and
verifies focus stays on Keep.
