PROJQUAY-14267: fix: preserve custom cache configuration during upgrade - #1403
Default an omitted cache component to unmanaged when the config bundle supplies DATA_MODEL_CACHE_CONFIG, preserving managed Redis.
Preserve explicit cache management choices and existing validation.
Document automatic migration and recovery when managed cache has already been persisted.
Validation
make test
make manager
make fmt and make vet
CI-style Linux/amd64 vendor build
Clean generated outputs and diff checks
The new two-reconcile controller regression fails before the change by persisting managed cache and then returning ConfigInvalid. It passes after the change, persisting unmanaged cache while Redis remains managed.
Limitations and follow-up
No live cluster upgrade was tested.
If a prior operator already persisted cache: managed: true, users retaining custom cache configuration must explicitly set cache unmanaged; the operator cannot distinguish that persisted default from an explicit choice.
A redhat-5.0 backport is needed because that branch contains the same affected logic.
When the cache component is omitted and the configuration bundle contains custom cache settings, reconciliation now defaults cache to unmanaged. Explicitly configured cache components remain unchanged.
Reconciliation now reports a rollout-blocked condition if it cannot check the configuration bundle, and clears the condition after a subsequent successful reconciliation.
Documentation
Updated upgrade guidance to explain cache defaults, custom cache settings, and how to retain those settings during upgrades.

Walkthrough
When the Cache component is omitted, reconciliation checks the config bundle for cache configuration and marks the defaulted Cache component unmanaged if configuration is present. A test verifies the persisted configuration on a second reconcile. Upgrade guidance describes these defaults and explicit Cache configuration.
Changes: Cache configuration defaulting

Summary
Detect and apply the cache default controllers/quay/quayregistry_controller.go, controllers/quay/quayregistry_controller_test.go, docs/upgrades.md
Reconcile checks the config bundle when Cache is omitted and marks the defaulted Cache component unmanaged if cache configuration is present. The test checks the persisted configuration on a second reconcile. Upgrade guidance describes the defaulting behavior and explicit Cache configuration.
The change is mergeable with a small test-isolation concern: the new test leaves resources behind until the suite ends.

Explanation
No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 2 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)
Full details: No Weak Cryptographic Algorithms
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes controller logic, tests, and upgrade documentation only. The added code uses component/configuration handling and contains no MD5, SHA-1, DES, RC4, 3DES, or InsecureSkipVerify: true. The repository has an existing InsecureSkipVerify occurrence in unchanged controllers/quay/features.go, so it is not introduced by this pull request.
Full details: No Privileged Containers
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only controller logic, controller tests, and upgrade documentation. It adds no container or Kubernetes manifest changes, and the added lines contain no privileged: true, hostPID: true, hostNetwork: true, hostIPC: true, or SYS_ADMIN capability setting.
Full details: No Sensitive Data In Logs
Explanation
No changed logging statement exposes sensitive data. The controller diff adds no log.Info, log.Error, klog.*, or fmt.Print* call. The new fmt.Sprintf text is used only in a rollout condition message, not a log entry, and it reports an error while checking cache configuration. Existing logs in the file are unchanged.

Clean up the resources created by each spec.
Each It runs this BeforeEach and creates a Secret and a QuayRegistry. The test does not register cleanup, so both resources remain in the shared test environment after the spec. Register DeferCleanup for the created resources, or delete them in AfterEach. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per path instructions, “resources created in tests must be cleaned up via defer or AfterEach. Flag leaked resources.”
