fix(plugin): preserve Windows Bash startup temp lifetime - #2199
Keep Windows Bash startup TMP/TEMP parent-lived instead of tying shared MSYS startup state to a removable fixture. Restore fixture-private child TMP/TEMP only after the existing trusted startup gate. POSIX behavior, security/ownership gates, error/exit/stderr and HTTP assertions, the two-second adapter guard and other deadlines remain unchanged. No warning filtering, formatter correction, production changes or budget increases.
Existing offline Go 1.26.10 evidence, reused only for identical frozen source bytes:
Native RED and GREEN used the same command: go test -mod=readonly -buildvcs=false ./plugin -run '^TestCodexBashTemp(StartupLifetime|HandoffChildPrivacy)$' -count=1 -timeout=2m -json
RED: startup lifetime FAIL, child privacy PASS, exit 1. GREEN: both PASS, exit 0; regression bytes unchanged.
go test -mod=readonly -buildvcs=false ./plugin -run '^TestLifecycleScriptsUseCanonicalProjectResolution$/^(claude-code_uses_configured_project_instead_of_git-derived_name|claude-code_fails_closed_when_canonical_resolution_is_unavailable|claude-code_fails_closed_when_canonical_resolution_is_malformed|claude-code_fails_closed_when_canonical_resolution_is_empty|claude-code_fails_closed_when_canonical_resolution_is_ambiguous|claude-code_fails_closed_when_canonical_resolution_is_invalid|claude-code_fails_closed_when_canonical_resolution_is_error_hint|claude-code_accepts_a_process_override_from_canonical_resolution|codex_uses_configured_project_instead_of_git-derived_name|codex_fails_closed_when_canonical_resolution_is_unavailable|codex_fails_closed_when_canonical_resolution_is_malformed|codex_fails_closed_when_canonical_resolution_is_empty|codex_fails_closed_when_canonical_resolution_is_ambiguous|codex_fails_closed_when_canonical_resolution_is_invalid|codex_fails_closed_when_canonical_resolution_is_error_hint|codex_accepts_a_process_override_from_canonical_resolution)$' -count=1 -timeout=2m -json

Portable Linux controls used Go arguments test ./plugin -run '^TestCodexBashTemp(StartupLifetime|HandoffChildPrivacy)$' -count=1 -timeout=2m -json in the existing isolated offline environment: 2 PASS, exit 0.
Recovery recorded exactLeaves=true for all three phases, zero unexpected tests/skips/warnings, sourceAndRefsUnchanged=true and targetRemoved=true. Earlier full-package/selected runs and preparation attempts failed. Those failures remain historical, not passes; the successful bounded recovery does not retroactively qualify them. No full-package local PASS is claimed.

Go helpers and go.mod/go.sum were unchanged between those revisions. Exact candidate commit: c422c53de23230189957b9e2e89b2eb84b56e1b9, three files, +112/-2.
Existing independent local S1-S9 review: PASS on the frozen sources. Committed-candidate independent artifact/evidence audit: PASS, no blocking findings; the parent separately confirmed the exact commit/tree and clean diff/status. This audit reused byte-identical functional evidence and did not rerun tests. Native committed-range assessment: reviewDue=false, under_budget; no native approval claimed.
No additional source changes or functional reruns during publication. Full-package success, native macOS and hosted CI remain unqualified locally.

Current-main verification
Current candidate: bbc7c07, integrated with canonical main 7cf4ed2 without rewriting history. Original three-file scope retained.
Fresh native Windows Go 1.26.10 RED/GREEN: the identical startup-lifetime and handoff-child-privacy regressions failed before integration (startup TMP/TEMP lifetime), then both passed with the fix (1.194s). Privacy passed in both phases. This constructor contract exposes the invalid lifetime without claiming a deterministic reproduction of MSYS warning emission.
Affected packages: go test -mod=readonly -json -count=1 -timeout=10m ./plugin ./scripts passed, exit 0. Plugin: 431.748s; scripts: 46.440s. This candidate contains neither the separate HTTP shell-selection patch nor #2195's CLI-reuse optimization. Existing assertions and standard package budget retained. This is a local two-package result, not a full-module hosted pass or proof every intermittent Windows failure is repaired.
Fresh current-head hosted CI and review remain pending; no merge or rollout activation is included.
Keep Windows MSYS startup temp owned by the test process, then restore private TMP/TEMP after the trusted handoff startup gate. Pin startup ownership and native child privacy without relaxing assertions or deadlines.
ClosesGentleman-Programming#2190
The changes update Codex Bash test fixtures to set temporary-directory variables by platform. New tests check startup environment values and verify temporary and private directory behavior in a Bash process and its jq child.
The fixtures use the process-start temp directory for TMP and TEMP on Windows. The cygpath startup script restores those variables to the fixture tmp directory after startup checks.
Startup and child-process checks plugin/codex_bash_temp_test.go
New tests check fixture environment values and run Bash with a native jq child. They assert directory identity, successful exit, empty stderr, and exact stdout.
Gentleman-Programming/engram#1891 — This issue includes Windows full-suite failures involving non-portable test fixtures; this change updates Windows Bash temp-directory fixture behavior.

Explanation
Issue #2190 is open and directly linked. The Windows fixture now keeps TMP and TEMP on the process-start native temp path. The startup script restores fixture-private TMP and TEMP only after the existing trusted startup checks. TestCodexBashTempStartupLifetime provides a deterministic lifetime regression. TestCodexBashTempHandoffChildPrivacy checks Bash and jq child privacy, exact stdout, and empty stderr. The relevant diff preserves the existing gate and does not add warning filtering, production changes, or timing changes.

Monitor cache storage. Each main push writes a new full Race cache archive.
The exact key ends with github.sha. Every push to main therefore misses the exact key and runs actions/cache/save. Each archive contains the full GOMODCACHE and the -raceGOCACHE. These directories can reach hundreds of MB or more. When main gets many pushes, these archives can fill the repository cache quota. Least-recently-used eviction can then remove caches that other jobs depend on.
The save predicate is correct for its purpose, so this does not block the merge. Track the Race cache entry size and the eviction rate after the merge. If eviction affects other jobs, take one of these actions:
Delete older race-v1- entries.
Save only when the compatibility prefix changes or on a schedule.

Qualified combined checkout: 76073c4838f31fc0de1c85b640953ee8372d9fe1, only five Go test files changed (+230/-12); original production, workflow, modules, native1.5s/public2s/package10m contracts are unchanged.
All 17 original CI jobs succeeded, including complete Windows, race, vulnerability, Unit/E2E/Plugin, native macOS/adapter, Windows setup/wrapper, lint, Postgres and performance checks. The original CI was used byte-for-byte, not a reduced harness.
Actual Windows Server2025 x64 image 20261021.278.1, Go1.26.10, Node24.22.1; original Go exit0. Native JSON inventory: 8603 PASS / 127 SKIP / 0 FAIL, 8730 unique test paths, every run/terminal once, zero unfinished/duplicate cases. All 38 original packages are accounted for (34 passed, four contain no tests); no original case disappeared after the explicitly reviewed Bash-layout renames and temp-derived name correspondence. The 127 skip identities are unchanged from the recorded main baseline, not additional coverage exemptions. All 50 prior Windows fixture/security paths and all 17 added lifetime/guard/layout cases passed.
Fresh independent review separately inspected both work-unit slices: no local blockers; focused46PASS, affected593PASS/10localplatformSKIP/0FAIL/empty stderr, exported952files unchanged. It confirmed all eight exact type/path guards and private child temp after the trusted startup gate. Parent check-only spot check passed. Legacy macOS process-count evidence was not claimed; the native Windows guard regression above exercises it.
Limits: this is one complete native integration success, not independent causal attribution of every historical intermittent failure, not a latency guarantee, and not proof that either standalone old branch was already green. Earlier failed runs remain failed; their statuses are not replaced. The fork run does not impersonate canonical required contexts. Required six checks and the normal merge queue remain mandatory. No timeout, assertion, skip, label/rules/approval or human-responsibility attestation was weakened or inferred. Contributor source/history/body remain intact.
Final canonical main verification — Windows repair complete
Both complementary source PRs merged through the mandatory native queue at 2026-10-31T21:47:37Z, with exact reviewed heads and no administrative bypass:
The final canonical tree 47de8548e3452d855ca6e4f92c7daad558dc35b3 is byte-identical to the independently/native-qualified integration. Both root issues #2190 and #2208 closed through their existing references; no approval/ownership/label mutation was used.
All 17 jobs succeeded. Final native Windows JSON independently checked against the qualified inventory: 8603 PASS / 127 unchanged SKIP / 0 FAIL, 8730 unique paths, original exit0, no missing/extra cases, changed outcomes, duplicates or unfinished tests. All 38 package outcomes match (34 passed, four have no tests). Exact checkout d1b5dcdff35d9160e71cf276db9fcbecd371733a; Windows2025 x64 image 20261021.278.1, Go1.26.10, Node24.22.1.
Production, workflow, native1.5s deadline, public2s assertion, package10m budget and all executable/path/ownership guards remain unchanged. No filtering, new skip, forced success, status substitution, or required-check/queue/settings change was needed. Earlier failed baseline/local checks remain failed historical evidence; final green is an observed result at this exact source, not a claim that every intermittent failure was explained or a stable whole-CI speed guarantee. The wider #1891 required-check rollout is not activated or closed by this repair.
