Windows SessionEnd regression time includes test-fixture startup before the CLI's existing 1.5-second HTTP deadline. Select Git's actual usr/bin/bash.exe and batch private-tool validation in one subprocess, removing avoidable fixture overhead while retaining the two-second total assertion.
The shared fixture still requires all eight tools to resolve as files at their exact private paths. Trusted Bash identity, root ownership, endpoint/argument guards, private PATH, exit statuses and stdout/stderr assertions are preserved. Changes are test-only: the SessionEnd shell selector, shared handoff helper, and a dedicated guard regression file. Production hooks and deadlines are unchanged.
The approved, assigned issue includes the measured cause and explicit shared-fixture follow-up scope. Current candidate: b4a7a1e, based on canonical main 7cf4ed2.
Verification
Deterministic RED/GREEN: eight distinct type-validation subprocesses before batching, one afterward. All eight tools are checked. Regressions reject every missing tool, function/active-alias shadows, and wrong resolved paths; roots contain spaces. Windows requires process-identity evidence; legacy macOS Bash executes behavior cases without claiming unavailable BASHPID evidence. No extra skips.
Clean temporary phase probes: validation portion 240.676ms before versus 44.983ms after; total process return 2075.541ms versus 1899.264ms. These individual local measurements are not a hosted timing guarantee. Temporary probe source is not included.
Original SessionEnd, candidate-layout, isolation and transport families plus the new guard tests passed on native Windows, Go 1.26.10: go test -mod=readonly ./plugin -run '^(TestCodexHandoffToolGuard|TestCodexTestBashCandidates|TestCodexUnixSessionEndAdapter|TestCodexShellIsolationPreflight|TestCodexHandoffTransportBoundary)$' -count=1 -timeout=2m -v (18.468s).
Final affected-package run: go test -mod=readonly -json -count=1 -timeout=10m ./plugin ./scripts exited 1. The HTTP leaf passed (1.91s); plugin completed at 549.995s with six silent UserPromptSubmit failures, and scripts failed at 48.670s with missing /tmp files in ratchet. These failures remain failed evidence; no global package timeout occurred.
Broad hosted CI and review on this candidate remain pending until they execute. Earlier head 15d59bf failed the hosted HTTP assertion at 2.0038326s; its green CodeRabbit result does not qualify this candidate.
Risk and scope limits
The gate comparison preserves exact type/path pairs, including fail-closed behavior on lookup failures. New guard tests have bounded subprocess execution. No warning filtering, deadline increase, workload reduction or new skip allowance.
The standalone branch does not include #2199's MSYS startup-temp lifetime repair or #2195's cached CLI reuse. Integration evidence is reported separately; no merge or Windows required-check rollout activation is included.
Local integration evidence
Combined with existing #2199 and #2195 in isolated commit 6f7f4b106b8a5f238185dc337c0d80496c7bc59d, all UserPromptSubmit validation cases, SessionEnd cases, transport and new tool-guard tests passed (51.094s). This resolves the concern that these particular failing behavior cases could not execute with the combined fixture changes, but is not independent causal attribution. The complete combined run exited 1: scripts passed in 55.516s; plugin hit its unchanged global ten-minute alarm at 600.197s. There were 621 test pass events and six skip events, with no individual test-failure events before the package alarm. The HTTP leaf passed at 1.90s. At alarm the active native prompt test had run six seconds, not ten minutes. This integration remains incomplete and is not hosted qualification.

Walkthrough
The test helper now searches for Git’s usr/bin/bash.exe in supported locations and rejects candidates outside that path, including the bin launcher. Tests cover supported layouts, launcher rejection, and a directory at a candidate path.
Changes: Git Bash fixture selection

Summary
Candidate search and validation plugin/codex_unix_session_end_test.go
codexTestBashCandidate searches supported usr/bin/bash.exe locations and excludes candidates that do not match that path. Tests cover accepted layouts, the bin/bash.exe launcher, and a directory at a candidate path.
This change only affects test fixtures. A narrow gap remains in how the Windows test picks Git Bash: it could select a Bash outside the chosen Git installation. This is unlikely to matter in normal environments, so the change is mergeable, and the owner may want to restrict the search to the Git root as a follow-up.

Explanation
The title "perf(tests): reduce Codex fixture startup overhead" matches the main change in the changeset. The raw summary shows a new test guard (codexHandoffToolGuard) that batches the eight tool checks into one command substitution, which reduces fixture startup subprocess work. The objectives state that the commit message "perf(tests): batch trusted Codex fixture tool checks" describes the same follow-up. The title is concise and specific. It does not mention the Git Bash path selection in codex_unix_session_end_test.go, which is a secondary change, so the title covers the primary change but not every file.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2208 requires the SessionEnd fixture to select native Git Bash, support cmd, bin, usr/bin, and mingw64/bin layouts, reject launcher-only, missing, and directory candidates, and preserve existing deadlines and assertions. codexTestBashCandidate now selects only usr/bin/bash.exe and tests all required layouts and rejection cases. The shared handoff guard validates all eight tools and exact paths in one subprocess. TestCodexHandoffToolGuard covers missing tools, function and alias shadows, wrong paths, private PATH behavior, and the subprocess budget. The focused verification reported in the PR description passed, and no production or deadline changes appear in the diff.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The diff is limited to test fixtures and test coverage in three plugin test files. The changes directly support #2208 by correcting shell selection, reducing shared-fixture subprocess startup cost, and adding guard regressions. The diff does not change production hooks, runtime behavior, HTTP deadlines, adapter assertions, rollout behavior, or unrelated MSYS work.

Restrict the search to the selected Git installation.
If C:\tools\Git\cmd\git.exe has no native Bash, this candidate can select C:\tools\usr\bin\bash.exe from another installation. The tests then execute that shell instead of rejecting the launcher-only Git installation. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Derive the installation root from the supported git.exe layout and search only its usr/bin/bash.exe. Add a test with a Bash executable outside that root.

Qualified combined checkout: 76073c4838f31fc0de1c85b640953ee8372d9fe1, only five Go test files changed (+230/-12); original production, workflow, modules, native1.5s/public2s/package10m contracts are unchanged.
All 17 original CI jobs succeeded, including complete Windows, race, vulnerability, Unit/E2E/Plugin, native macOS/adapter, Windows setup/wrapper, lint, Postgres and performance checks. The original CI was used byte-for-byte, not a reduced harness.
Actual Windows Server2025 x64 image 20261021.278.1, Go1.26.10, Node24.22.1; original Go exit0. Native JSON inventory: 8603 PASS / 127 SKIP / 0 FAIL, 8730 unique test paths, every run/terminal once, zero unfinished/duplicate cases. All 38 original packages are accounted for (34 passed, four contain no tests); no original case disappeared after the explicitly reviewed Bash-layout renames and temp-derived name correspondence. The 127 skip identities are unchanged from the recorded main baseline, not additional coverage exemptions. All 50 prior Windows fixture/security paths and all 17 added lifetime/guard/layout cases passed.
Fresh independent review separately inspected both work-unit slices: no local blockers; focused46PASS, affected593PASS/10localplatformSKIP/0FAIL/empty stderr, exported952files unchanged. It confirmed all eight exact type/path guards and private child temp after the trusted startup gate. Parent check-only spot check passed. Legacy macOS process-count evidence was not claimed; the native Windows guard regression above exercises it.
Limits: this is one complete native integration success, not independent causal attribution of every historical intermittent failure, not a latency guarantee, and not proof that either standalone old branch was already green. Earlier failed runs remain failed; their statuses are not replaced. The fork run does not impersonate canonical required contexts. Required six checks and the normal merge queue remain mandatory. No timeout, assertion, skip, label/rules/approval or human-responsibility attestation was weakened or inferred. Contributor source/history/body remain intact.
Final canonical main verification — Windows repair complete
Both complementary source PRs merged through the mandatory native queue at 2026-10-31T21:47:37Z, with exact reviewed heads and no administrative bypass:
The final canonical tree 47de8548e3452d855ca6e4f92c7daad558dc35b3 is byte-identical to the independently/native-qualified integration. Both root issues #2190 and #2208 closed through their existing references; no approval/ownership/label mutation was used.
All 17 jobs succeeded. Final native Windows JSON independently checked against the qualified inventory: 8603 PASS / 127 unchanged SKIP / 0 FAIL, 8730 unique paths, original exit0, no missing/extra cases, changed outcomes, duplicates or unfinished tests. All 38 package outcomes match (34 passed, four have no tests). Exact checkout d1b5dcdff35d9160e71cf276db9fcbecd371733a; Windows2025 x64 image 20261021.278.1, Go1.26.10, Node24.22.1.
Production, workflow, native1.5s deadline, public2s assertion, package10m budget and all executable/path/ownership guards remain unchanged. No filtering, new skip, forced success, status substitution, or required-check/queue/settings change was needed. Earlier failed baseline/local checks remain failed historical evidence; final green is an observed result at this exact source, not a claim that every intermittent failure was explained or a stable whole-CI speed guarantee. The wider #1891 required-check rollout is not activated or closed by this repair.
